Setting Portal Width and Layout per View

2 min read

ClientPress lets you control the content width of each portal view — globally as a site-wide default, or individually per portal for select views. This lets you optimize the reading experience depending on what each tab contains.

Width Options #

Every view that supports a width setting offers three choices:

  • Inherit — Sits inside your theme’s normal content container width (default)
  • Full Width — Stretches edge-to-edge within the portal layout — good for dashboards, kanban boards, or image-heavy content
  • Narrow — Constrained reading width — good for text-heavy views like discussion threads or document-style content

Setting Global Width Defaults #

Global defaults apply to all portals unless overridden at the portal level.

  1. Go to Settings → ClientPress → Appearance.
  2. Find the Portal Layout section.
  3. Set the width for each view.
  4. Save settings.

Views with Global Width Settings #

Global width settings are available for: Overview (Portal), Discussion, Files, Docs, Message Board, and Calendar.

Overriding Width per Portal #

Some views also allow a per-portal width override. This is useful when one client’s portal benefits from a different layout than your global default.

To set a per-portal width:

  1. Open the portal in your WordPress admin.
  2. In the portal editor sidebar, find the Layout section.
  3. For each supported view, choose Use Global Setting, Inherit, Full Width, or Narrow.
  4. Save the portal.

Views with Per-Portal Width Overrides #

Per-portal overrides are available for Overview and Discussion and Files. The Docs, Message Board, and Calendar views use the global setting only — they do not support per-portal overrides.

Recommendations #

  • Full Width works well for the Tasks (kanban board) and Calendar views where horizontal space improves usability
  • Narrow works well for Discussion threads and Docs where a constrained line length improves readability
  • Inherit is the safest default if you’re unsure — it will match your theme’s existing layout
