Before inviting your first client, take a few minutes to configure ClientPress. This checklist walks through the key settings so your portals are ready to use from day one.
1. Review Which Features You Want Active #
Go to Settings → ClientPress → Features.
Turn off any tabs you don’t plan to use. Hidden tabs are removed from the portal navigation entirely — clients won’t see them. You can change these at any time.
Features you can enable or disable:
- Discussion
- Message Board
- Task Manager (with optional Calendar and Task Status sub-options)
- Files
- Deliverables
- Tools & Links
Also set the Portal Landing Tab — this is the first tab clients see when they open their portal.
2. Configure File Upload Settings #
Go to Settings → ClientPress → File Uploads.
Set:
- Maximum file size — up to 100 MB per file
- Maximum files per submission — up to 50 at once
- Allowed file types — choose from documents, spreadsheets, images, and archives
- Who can delete files — select which user roles have permission to delete uploaded files
3. Set Up Access & Login Options #
Go to Settings → ClientPress → Access & Login.
- Login Redirect — Enable this to automatically send clients to their portal after logging in. Select which roles this applies to.
- Magic Login Links — Enable one-click login links in notification emails. Recommended for a smoother client experience.
- Invitation Link Expiry — Choose how long a client invitation link stays valid (7, 14, 21, or 30 days).
- Admin Notifications — Choose whether admins receive a notification for every portal activity by default.
4. Configure Appearance #
Go to Settings → ClientPress → Appearance.
- Set a default accent color for all portals under Appearance → Customize → Portal Colors. Individual portals can override this with their own color.
- Configure the Powered By pill — choose whether to show it, and where it appears.
- Optionally set tab icons for each portal section.
5. Create at Least One Portal Category #
If you plan to use Guides (global support documents), you’ll need portal categories. Guides are assigned to categories, and portals in that category automatically receive them.
Go to Portals → Portal Categories and create a category (e.g., “SEO Clients” or “Web Design”).
This step is optional if you don’t plan to use the Guides feature.
6. Add Your Team Members #
If you have team members who will manage portals, create Project Manager accounts for them.
Go to Users → Add New and assign the Project Manager role. Project managers can access and manage portals they are assigned to, but cannot access the WordPress admin beyond their portal responsibilities.
7. Create Your First Portal #
Once settings are configured, you’re ready to create a portal and invite your first client.
